California soil could absorb more than 1,000 tons of carbon from the atmosphere each year

California is turning to nature in the fight against climate change: by improving soil health. Their Healthy Soils Initiative draws on farm and land management techniques to build organic soil matter with the goal of slashing greenhouse gas emissions and sequestering more carbon. The initiative's website quoted Governor Jerry Brown as saying, "As the leading agricultural state in the nation, it is important for California's soils to be sustainable and resilient to climate change."
