El Salvador just became the first country to ban metal mining

El Salvador just became the first country ever to ban metal mining. In a historic move, the country will no longer allow "prospection, exploration, exploitation, extraction or processing of metallic minerals." New super-strong brick shows the soil on Mars makes an excellent building material

Future Mars dwellers may actually be able to use locally sourced materials for their buildings. Four University of California, San Diego engineers, funded by NASA, were able to press Mars-like dirt into bricks. No other materials were necessary to keep the bricks together. Since storage will be limited on any craft carrying astronauts to Mars, these bricks could mean they could free up space and utilize the red planet's resources to construct habitations. Related:

MIT unveils new solar 3D printer that can build houses on other planets

Some people dismissed 3D-printing in its early days as a novelty, but these days the technology is coming into its own and researchers at MIT have just taken 3d-printing to the next level. Lithium-ion batteries made from recycled glass bottles store almost 4x more energy

A team of researchers at UC Riverside developed a low-cost way of turning disgarded glass bottles into lithium-ion batteries that store almost four times more energy and can last much longer than conventional batteries. Deadly new bird flu strain could lead to devastating pandemic

You probably haven't thought about the bird flu in a couple of years, but a new strain that resurfaced in China has the potential to be pandemic. This new strain has led to more human deaths than any others in any season since H7N9 was detected in people four years ago. Newly discovered exoplanet may be the best place to search for extraterrestrial life

Earlier this year, scientists identified seven planets orbiting a star that looked ideally-placed for hosting life, but we really don't know enough about those planets to say with any real conviction. On the other hand, LHS 1140b comes with more data that makes it an exciting and promising potential.

Air-purifying pavilion uses plants to absorb harmful toxins in Hanoi

A green oasis has popped up in Hanoi, a city choked by smog. Hung Nguyen Architects designed and built the Pavilion of Origins, a greenery-draped structure that uses living plants to purify the air. Set on the terrace of a three-story house in Hanoi, the pavilion is minimal and modern with a simple palette of green leafy plants, white upcycled steed frames, and a light gray pebble floor. Hanoi ranks among the worst in the world for air pollution with traffic congestion blamed as the leading...

A mile-wide asteroid is flying uncomfortably close to Earth tomorrow

A mile-wide asteroid is about to swing by Earth tomorrow, making its closest pass to Earth in 400 years. Nicknamed 'The Rock' because of its massive size, the asteroid is barreling towards Earth at 73 mph and won't be this close again for at least another 500 years. Scientists don't know much about The Rock - it was only identified 3 years ago - but we do know that it is twice as reflective as the moon, so you might be able to watch it fly past on its way through the galaxy.

BP oil and gas spill near the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge under control

A BP oil and gas well in Alaska blew out late last week, uncontrollably spilling crude oil and gas just around 60 miles away from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The well was out of control through the weekend. The Arctic oil spill happened just days before the seven year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Taiwan is first Asian country to ban eating cats and dogs

Even abject carnivores in the West balk at the idea of raising dogs and cats for their meat, but East and Southeast Asian countries, particularly those mired in poverty, share those some qualms. As incomes, not to mention concerns over animal welfare, continue to grow in those regions, however, the practice is slowly but steadily on the decline. Taiwan is willing to take the next leap: outlawing it altogether. Legislature passed on Tuesday will make the island nation the first in Asia to ban dog...

Tiny thermophotovoltaic device harvests energy from infrared wavelengths

Waste heat could be a valuable source of energy, and now two Duke University researchers have created a thermophotovoltaic device that could harvest that waste heat. The device's solar cells capture infrared wavelengths, and could allow us harvest heat near furnaces or use the heat coming from a car engine to charge the car's battery. Related:

The Tesla Model S just got a tiny bit more affordable

Shortly after announcing that Tesla plans to cut its relatively more affordable Model S 60 and 60D from its lineup, the company revealed that it will be reducing the price on its new entry-level models, the 75 and 75D, by $5,000 to make up the price difference. It’s still $1,500 more than the previous model, but given that it retails for almost $70,000, that might not be a major issue for potential buyers. Those aren’t the only Model S variants to receive a price cut. The 90D’s...

Cave homes have come a long way since prehistoric times. Far from primitive, many modern cave dwellings are surprisingly luxurious, comfortable, and beautiful places to call home. In addition to their head-turning location, cave homes tend to be very energy efficient thanks to their naturally insulating earth walls that keep the inside air at comfortable temperatures year-round without need for heating or cooling. For the first time, climate change has caused a river to completely reroute
