Through its program Keep Houston Rolling, local non-profit organization Houston Bike Share is distributing free bicycles to those who lost their vehicles in Hurricane Harvey. When the powerful storm dumped a record amount of rain on the Houston area, damaging at least 100,000 homes and killing more than 70 people, it also destroyed hundreds of thousands of cars. Houston is a car city, as is clear in its infrastructure and its local culture.
