Hundreds of organisms hitch a ride from Japan to Oregon on waves of plastic trash

Japanese marine animals have made their way all the way to the United States with unlikely help from plastic garbage. The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan dumped debris into the ocean, and now, several years later, scientists have recorded almost 300 marine animal species from Japan showing up in Hawaii and North America, riding on hundreds of crates, buoys, vessels, and trash.
