Chinese builders have had to consider earthquakes in their designs, and as far back as around 500 BC they came up with a solution to earthquake-proof structures: interlocking flower-shaped brackets called dougong. The joints have helped the Forbidden City to remain standing through 200 earthquakes in 600 years.
