We're filling up the world with plastic, and in landfills the material might not break down for as long as a millennium. A group of scientists wondered if there was a solution in nature to our plastic problem, and they actually found one: a plastic-devouring soil fungus. Enzymes the fungus secretes on plastic break the chemical bonds holding together plastic molecules.
