Could cyborg bacteria generate the clean fuel of the future? Work conducted at Peidong Yang's laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley basically allowed bacteria to cover themselves in small semiconductors that functioned like solar panels. The bacteria were able to capture sunlight with an efficiency of 80 percent - around four times better than today's solar panels and six times better than chlorophyll in plants.
