Mirrored pavilion all but disappears into nature

Portuguese architecture agency depA has hidden a pavilion in plain sight. This camouflaged structure, clad in mirrored panels, appears to disappear into the lush green landscape and houses an impressive artwork for those who manage to find their way inside. Located in Porto’s Serralves Park, the aptly named Liquid Pavilion is a temporary installation belonging to the famed Serralves Museum, Portugal’s leading contemporary art museum. The mirrored Liquid Pavilion reflects images...

Cold front turns Niagara Falls into a glorious icy wonderland

In case you hadn't heard: it's cold in th Eastern half of North America. Very cold. In fact, it's so cold that the normally roaring Niagara Falls have frozen over, leaving a mesmerizing massive wall of ice. https://www.instagram.com/p/BdaIxmEHDhn/?hl=en&tagged=niagarafalls The frigid temperatures east of the Rocky Mountains have been setting new records. This week, it has been -15 Faranheit in Niagara Falls, while Edmonton in Alberta felt like -40 degrees... that's colder than Mars is right...

Pacific starfish bounce back after massive die-off

It may feel like it's a constant stream of bad news for the environment, so brace yourself for something a good. A few years ago, it seemed as though we may completely lose sea stars on the West Coast after a mysterious wasting syndrome rapidly killed millions of the creatures from Canada to Mexico. But this year, researchers say that starfish are making a massive comeback. Sea Star Wasting Syndrome hit the West Coast from 2013 to 2014, causing starfish to sort of "melt," dropping limbs, deflating...

Exquisite Japanese house wraps around a generations-old tree

The line between nature and architecture is often blurred in Japan to beautiful effect. Japanese architect Takashi Okuno practices this kind of nature-fused architecture with Hiiragi’s House, a modern Japanese-style residence built around a courtyard and old tree that the client’s family has tended to for generations. Located in the Ehime Prefecture, the house is minimally decorated and built with large expanses of glass to focus the eye on the use of simple, natural materials and courtyard views. Named...

Renovated forever home strives to minimize its carbon footprint

Sustainable architecture doesn’t have to come at the cost of beauty. Take, for example, this lovely refurbished home in Melbourne with its elegantly exposed timber frame, modern decor, and eco-certified building materials. Foomann Architects led the redesign, titled Ballantyne Street, to meet the client’s brief for a sustainable home where they intend to live in forever. Foomann Architects preserved much of the single-story dwelling’s original structure, including the front,...
